The relationship between human beings and the conditions of their existence has always been one of humanity's fundamental concerns. Among these relationships, that between human beings and time and space is of particular significance, for within the material world time and space continually impose limitations upon human beings and impede their attainment of higher ends. Accordingly, the present study seeks to answer the central question: “What is the relationship of the human being, as a ‘Rational Animal’ or a ‘Divine Human’ (Ḥayy Mutaʾallih), to time and space?” Employing a descriptive and analytical method with a practical orientation toward human life, this article attempts to address this question. The principal findings indicate that the human relationship with time and space depends upon one's participation in different degrees of immateriality (imaginal immateriality and intellectual immateriality). The human being as a rational animal, insofar as he directs his efforts toward placing anger and desire increasingly in the service of his animal nature, remains perpetually subject to time and space and is never liberated from their limitations. By contrast, the human being who attains intellectual immateriality enters the world of intellect as the cause of the material world and thereby exercises dominion over all the properties of matter, including time and space. Based on these findings, the relationship between human beings and time and space is unique to each individual, and each person's perception of them differs from that of others, although the inverse relationship—that is, the relationship of time and space to human beings—appears to remain constant.
