The concept of perfection is one of the fundamental issues across various fields of knowledge. The principal question addressed in this article is: What is the nature of perfection from al-Fārābī's perspective? To answer this question, a descriptive and analytical method has been employed. The principal findings of this study indicate that al-Fārābī does not provide an essential definition of perfection; rather, by perfection he means the absence of deficiency. He maintains that there exists a relationship among perfection, happiness, pleasure, and goodness. That is, all forms of goodness and happiness constitute a kind of perfection for human beings, and at least some forms of pleasure are instances of perfection. In other words, although these concepts differ semantically, they share at least some common referents. According to al-Fārābī, perfection is a gradational (tashkīkī) reality possessing different degrees. A consideration of beings reveals that God occupies the highest rank of perfection, whereas material beings exist at its lower levels. In his various works, al-Fārābī identifies three criteria—the Active Intellect, happiness (saʿādah), and attaining proximity to the Divine Presence—as the criteria of ultimate perfection. These three criteria are not mutually exclusive; rather, they are capable of being harmonized. He also discusses perfection with respect to God's essence, attributes, and actions, and offers demonstrative arguments in support of his claims.
